Two more projects
Monday morning early in the shower I was thinking that there really should be a site that gathered neopagan and pagan related news. I thought maybe I could ask on reddit. Then I thought maybe I should just host one if I could set it up so it wouldn't need much from me to keep it going. I thought about asking for help on reddit. Then I thought about researching.
It took me about an hour or so from the shower to decide that it was possible and I could mostly do it with software I already had. The next step was designing a logo.
I always start a project by designing a logo. Even if I end up with a different logo or no logo at all. I'm very visually oriented.
I had to pick a name. Pagan Vigil Something was obvious since I was going to use the www.paganvigil.net addy. I wanted to use something like a newspaper name. I thought about Report, and settled on Record. A few days later I changed it to Reader and reworked the logo slightly. The Pagan Vigil Reader it was. After all, it's basically an aggregator using RSS feeds.
PVR is a pretty simple site. I used an earlier version of the same Rapid Weaver Theme I used for Pagan Vigil and made the necessary changes to the index page. Now the logo would go back to the main page.
One little touch that I was particularly proud of was renaming the page to de-emphasize the site name. The browser title on the main page is "PVR • neopagan headlines & news from around the World." That way the slogan gets more attention than the site name, especially on the stat counts.
From shower to taking the site online, it took a day and a half.
Based on suggestions from reddit and other readers I tried to make it easier to use. I went with a simpler palette. I set up a makeshift mobile site until I got a proper one worked out. I consolidated the feeds and made it bigger. I added separate pages for each dedicated feed. I took out the links in the title for my other sites and created a NeoWayland Network feeds page.
Along the way I also resurrected a bare-bones version of the NeoWayland NetWork, it will sort of be my personal homepage instead of working blogs like three of the others. I also fixed the logo on this site again.
I'm going to have to create a dedicated mobile sub site, I may be able to do that with my existing themes. Then I'll add a detect and redirect page.
It's taken more time than I thought but I'm satisfied.
There is one more issue I haven't solved yet. For some reason, the PVR badges I put together in Typestyler have extra space around them. The new logo does too, but it's not as critical there. Trimming doesn't fix the problem entirely.
