Posted on Sat - December 10, 2005 Favorite Palm Software - UpdatedOne of Palm's strengths has always been it's
third party software. There is a ton of stuff out there and most of it works
pretty well. There are some exceptions but I won't go into those here. These
are the proven winners and these programs will help you get the most out of your
Palm.
DateBk5 - without a doubt the single best
calendar on the Palm. Two of the biggest reasons for me is that it uses
multiple size and color of fonts and that it handles multiple time zones well.
In other words, you can schedule an appointment with someone on their time and
DateBk5 can adjust that to your time.
Because of the way that Palm Desktop handles conduits, the secondary time doesn't show on your regular computer. Those alone I think would justify the cost of the software, but it also does a really nice integration of the To Do list AND it can use templates with pre-entered information. DateBk5 uses the same database as built in applications, so most of the information is transfered to your computer (not the extra fonts, icons, colors, or secondary appointment times, but almost everything else). If you buy only one extra program for your Palm, this should be it. I've never found a single Contact program that did everything I wanted it to do, but then I am a lot more elaborate with my contact information than most people. I have my own system of tracking important contact information which started out based on the Mackay 66. My base contact program is PhoneMagic. It again uses the same database as the built-in applications, but it does it so much better. In other applications, you can put <brackets> around a contact name, and then look up contact information as needed. It has a very intelligent search, and it's default screen shows the most recently viewed. One to three letters is usually enough to look someone up. Oh, and I usually break out "sensitive" information in a separate entry with a less formal name, generally the stuff I don't want to share. Brain Forest is the second part of my contact strategy, and it is also one of the best outliners I have ever used. Since no handheld computer is complete without annoying sounds, there is always TechSounds. This is a later version of course. Big Clock is my general purpose clock, unfortunately it hasn't been updated in quite some time and is no longer compatible with the latest Palms. Still, it is great, up to five time zones, four alarms, and a timer. IOUMate is a great program, but no longer being supported for the Palm Platform by MobiMate. As a Pagan, I find Sol! II to be absolutely invaluble. It calculates sunrise and sunset for your specific location. It also provides a solar/lunar compass. Moon Info! from the same publisher works pretty well too, although for sheer looks it is hard to beat Moon Phase (which is no longer available) from the same vendor. I almost forgot WordSmith from Blue Nomad. This is the closest you can get to a full featured word processor on your Palm. Hope that this whets your appetite. |
Hello There
This is my no frills blog to cover all the gadgets and gizmos and technology that makes 21st Century life so exciting. Think of it as a messy set of notes that I keep for myself on all sorts of topics. It's really intended for my personal use, but I will explain sometimes as I go along.
My passion is for Macintosh and other Apple products, but I will use others as needed. If my notes and experiences can help or amuse you, so much the better. Categories
