Contact Software - Updated

Thoughts after using Apple's Address Book

Over the last few months, I've been moving my Palm information from Palm Desktop to Apple Address Book and iCal. I've been using The Missing Sync for Palm by Mark/Space with mixed results. Due to one out of service computer and another with hard drive problems, I'm pretty much reconstructing my calendar information.

The Address book is working rather well, except addresses that I have deleted keep reappearing. Let's look at our old friend Justa Guy again.

He's had a promotion and moved since I last showed you his card, but Address Book has several advantages to Palm Desktop. I'm using tags instead of categories, and I can put as many as I want. That little [Comments] is a formatting bit to put the contact notes on my Palm.

Birthday's are entered automatically in iCal, but you can't edit them. So for the birthdays I want to observe, I usually do separate events and use DateBk6 to give custom colors and icons on my Palm. That also lets me enter special information like location and notes for that event.

Besides my regular contacts, I put in notable people. Old habits die hard and I usually gather what information I can on people who interest me, I usually turn off the regular birthday display in DateBk6 and just go with the special events. So while I keep track of certain actors, they all don't rate special birthday entries. Ron Glass and Brooke Shields are both included in my entertainment list, but I didn't have a crush on Ron when I was a young teenager.

Other special dates still have to be entered manually. I prefer this because it lets me customize the information. For example, if I were going to list Justa's anniversary, the entry would read something like "Justa & Notta Anniversary. <Justa Guy> and <Notta Guy>, 1963" Those brackets let me use PhoneMagic on the Palm to look up contact information.

Clicking on the word next to the number in Address Book could dial a cell phone for you. Clicking on the email name will launch your email client and address an email for you. Clicking on the date words will take you to that date in iCal, and clicking on the people words will bring up that person's card (if they have one). Nothing new here, but it's really nice integration and it's beyond what Palm Desktop provided.

The other nice thing is that you aren't limited to four phone numbers or a two addresses, you can extend as needed.
