Posted on Tue - September 19, 2006 NeoWayland NetWork banners and badgeYep, I've been tweaking again. The banners
that I was using at neowayland.net didn't have the correct addresses and were a
little busy. They also didn't match anything else on the site. It was time to
get to work.
The old banners look good, but they have too
many elements that distract. And I think the background was based on a
Microsoft background. Reason enough to upgrade. Headers
first.
As you can see, the original is just way too big and in your face. A few feet away from your computer and it just sort of all blends in. I broke a whole bunch of design rules on it, some deliberately, but the big problem is that the background is just too busy. In the second one, the letters just draw your attention. The background, while still textured, is neutral enough not to distract. Since the pentagram isn't one of my favorite symbols anyway, I dropped it. That in turn let me play with a less regimented and symmetrical layout. I wish I could claim credit for the way that the "W" in network aligns with the "W" and "y" from the NeoWayland above, but that was a happy accident. I did tweak the spacing between the two words to capitalize on it though. The green is actually a jpg of green smoke that I always thought looked more like fine green marble. The light letters in the last line aren't actually white, they are another jpg, this time of a blue cloud. Here are the general purpose banners. The original is a nice variation of my original header, but still too big for most purposes. And once again it is busy, busy, busy. In the second version, I tried a compromise between my new header and the NetWork badge I had been using on my blogs for the last few months. I did pretty good I think. The triskelion replacing the "o," that was deliberate. I've done that before a few times. And it is more of a standard size rather than just "what looks good" to the ole Eyeball Mark I. Of course, there are just enough differences so it no longer ties in with the NeoWayland NetWork badge was using. The top is the one I was using, the next is the new version. Not that different, except the new one is more of a standard size and now uses the green smoke jpg to tie it to the two banners. |
Hello There
This is my no frills blog to cover all the gadgets and gizmos and technology that makes 21st Century life so exciting. Think of it as a messy set of notes that I keep for myself on all sorts of topics. It's really intended for my personal use, but I will explain sometimes as I go along.
My passion is for Macintosh and other Apple products, but I will use others as needed. If my notes and experiences can help or amuse you, so much the better. Categories
