Posted on Sun - December 17, 2006 Palm TX UpdateWell, it's been a few months and I thought I
would tell you how my Palm TX is working out.
One of my first accessory purchases was the
IR keyboard from Palm. I thought long and hard
about a Bluetooth keyboard. Aside from the price, some airlines frown on
Bluetooth during flights, so the IR made more sense for me. The keyboard takes
a little bit to get going, but once the TX is getting a signal, it is absolutely
great. Works amazingly well for
meetings.
My second purchase was a leather flip case from Rhinoskin. My previous two Palms had variants of this case and I have been very happy with all. I really love the belt clip and the fact I can spin the case. The email and the web browsers have not been nearly as useful as I thought they would be. Part of it is the lack of WiFi coverage in most areas, although restaurants and hotels make up for a lot of that. You definitely need to use a nonstandard port to send mail as most commercial WiFi networks have port 20 blocked. Attachments are virtually useless. I finally ended up getting a Gmail account dedicated to my Palm to prevent mail syncing issues. Another issue that was causing more resets than necessary was the "hourly chime" from Palmary Clock. In all fairness, I was using a recorded sound rather than a MIDI file. There is a volume difference between MIDI sounds and WAV files. As a music player, the TX is only OK. In fairness though, I have to admit I do have an iPod. Besides the volume difference and the external speaker, my other complaint is the amount of music that the TX can hold. Still, I am old enough to remember my first Walkman that tended to eat batteries every other tape or so. You can fit an album or two on the TX without too much problem. Two features I find I am missing the most are a camera and voice memos. Although I still have my thumbdrive, the 4 GB card has more than enough space to hold a half gigabyte encrypted disc image for secure file transfer between my main iMac and my iBook. That still leaves plenty of space for other files to move between my Macs and the Windows machines I have to work with. |
Hello There
This is my no frills blog to cover all the gadgets and gizmos and technology that makes 21st Century life so exciting. Think of it as a messy set of notes that I keep for myself on all sorts of topics. It's really intended for my personal use, but I will explain sometimes as I go along.
My passion is for Macintosh and other Apple products, but I will use others as needed. If my notes and experiences can help or amuse you, so much the better. Categories
